Royal endorsement for inclusivity in cycling
Specifically catering for blind and visually impaired cyclists, at Tandem Trekkers we pride ourselves on empowering people suffering from a sight disability to feel the freedom and joy that cycling brings. As a voluntary organisation, we’ve been working hard to provide this since 2014, so to be handed a Focus Club Award by the Duchess of Edinburgh, as part of the British Cycling (BC) Limitless programme is, without doubt, an extremely significant milestone for our charity.
On Friday, 23 February 2024, British Cycling held its Limitless Club celebrations at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, a day to be inspired, learn, and connect with others who are passionate about including more people in the cycling world. Limitless is BC’s inclusive cycling programme, which provides cycling opportunities for disabled people, regardless of age, impairment and ability.
We were absolutely delighted when we learned that Prince Edward and his wife, the Duchess of Edinburgh, were attending, the Duchess being Patron of British Cycling.
For an organisation like ourselves to receive the Focus Club award, and to be thanked in recognition for the difference we aim to make in the lives of other disabled cyclists, means the world. Disability and impairment are, sadly, still barriers that need tearing down.
Keen to share the experience built up over the last ten years, we remain privileged to have the opportunity to help improve the opportunities for other disabled cyclists nationally.
